Wenn jemand ein Wallpaper vom letzten Bild will, einfach mailen. Bis in 1600×1200 vorhanden.

Ein Dell Latitude C810, PIII 1000MHz, 512MB RAM, CDRW/DVD Kombi, 20GB Platte, 2 66Wh Akkus, eine Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 WLAN Mini-PCI-Karte und eine GeForce2GO mit 16 MB für knapp 650 Euro auf eBay. (Mitte 2004)

Das wichtigste vorneweg: Quake3 macht in 800×600 85fps *g*

Um erstmal so weit zu kommen war einiges zu tun, es war meine erste gentoo-Installation (Stage1 2004.3), und nach ca. 22-26h Kompilieren war erstmal ein Grundsystem mit X und Gnome vorhanden, das schon sehr gut lief:

Nach reichlich Googeln und Murksen stand dann die xorg.conf, die aktuelle Version gibt’s unten zum Kopieren. 1400×1050 auf unter 15″ sind schon fies, aber wenn man sich dran gewöhnt hat, will man nichts anderes mehr:

Noch Themes für den Desktop und GDM sowie die Cursor suchen, und fertig. Naja, “fertig”… wer’s glaubt… – Aber es wird. Hier der Login-Manager im xnest:

Der Sound läuft mit dem ALSA-Modul maestro3, die Mini-PCI-Karte mit den ipw2200-Treibern und die Grafikkarte mit den nVidia-Treibern 1.0.6111. Für das WLAN mußte die 3Com Netzwerk/Modemkarte weichen (würde mit dem 3c90x-Treiber laufen), aber wer braucht im Notebook schon kabelbasiertes Netzwerk…

Hier ist die xorg.conf für das C810. Wenn x.org mit den NVidia-Treibern nicht will gibt’s auch in den gentoo-Foren und hier noch mehr Informationen.

Ich hab’s hier bei “Give Me Some Latitude” schon als Comment geschrieben – das Problem haben fast alle Dell Inspiron und Latitude Notebooks irgendwann mal, egal ob C610, C810, 8000, 8100 oder andere – aber es ist fast nichts im Netz dazu zu finden.

Die Lösung sind die Steckverbinder von

• 1) Dem Folienkabel vom Touchpad und den 4 Tasten zum Mainboard und
• 2) Dem Folienkabel von Tastatur und Pointing-Stick zum Mainboard.

Wenn man auf der Unterseite des Notebooks die mit “K” (für Keyboard) markieren Schrauben löst, kann man von oben mit einem Mini-Schraubenzieher rechts unter die Tastatur hebeln und sie vorsichtig nach links wegklappen – links ist eine Art Scharniere.

Meist sind die Stecker der beide Folienkabel abgerutscht, halb abgerutscht oder einfach nur ein wenig oxidiert, so daß kein Kontakt mehr da ist oder “Phantomschmerzen” den Mauszeiger wandern lassen. In 99% aller Fälle in horizontaler Richtung…

Die beiden Stecker ein paar Mal abziehen und wieder aufstecken, dann die Tastatur wieder einlegen und von hinten zuschrauben. Aber aufpassen, die Stecker lockern sich gerne auf den letzten paar mm, kurz vor dem Einlegen der Tastatur – dann, wenn man sie schon fast nichtmehr sieht.

If you remove your keypad (no matter if Inspiron or Latitude) by unscrewing the 1-3 screws on the backside that are labeled “K” (for Keyboard), you can lift the keyboard out from above by carefully inserting a tiny screwdriver on the right hand side and swinging it open to the left (There’s some kind of hinge on the left).

You will see 2 foil cables with connectors about where the space key is located:

One comes from the palmrest and has the wires for the touchpad and the 4 buttons, the other one comes directly from the keyboard and has keyboard wires and those from the pointing stick.

The connectors of all of my Dells were a) loose or b) were somewhat oxidated. In most cases it’s the pointing stick connector, not the palmrest one!

Carefully disconnect and reconnect them a few times (to scratch the connecting surfaces an so clean them), and watch closely that you don’t unplug a connector again from the system board on the last few mm of inserting the keyboard – they like to come loose exactly then when you almost can’t see them anymore

New BIOS and drivers are a good idea, clearly – but all mine (plus a C810 and a C610 I own privately) had the problem with the connectors.
